Capturing email addresses in Instagram DMs (and why it's worth the friction)
Your Instagram audience is rented. An email list is not.

Everything you build on Instagram sits on land you do not own. Reach changes, formats fall out of favour, accounts get restricted for reasons that are never fully explained. An email address is the one asset in the chain that keeps working when any of that happens.
Which is why email capture inside a DM flow is worth the friction it costs — as long as you are honest with yourself about the fact that it costs some.
How it works in a comment-to-DM flow
Someone comments your keyword. The automated DM asks for their email before, or alongside, delivering the thing they asked for. They reply with an address, and it is captured and forwarded to your email tool — in CommentFor, to Kit or Flodesk if you have connected one.
The mechanics are easy. The part that decides whether it works is the ask.
Asking without killing the conversion
Give a reason. "What's your email and I'll send the full guide as a PDF" converts. "Enter your email to continue" does not. The first explains why the format requires it; the second reads as a toll.
Match the ask to the value. Asking for an address in exchange for a link people expected to receive freely feels like a bait-and-switch. Asking in exchange for something that genuinely needs delivering — a document, a course, a waitlist place — does not.
Consider giving the thing first. Deliver the link, then offer something additional for an address. Conversion on the ask drops, but nobody feels tricked, and the people who do give you an address actually want to hear from you. On a small list that difference matters more than the raw count.
Say what happens next. "I'll send the guide and an occasional email about new drops — unsubscribe any time" sets an expectation. It reduces sign-ups slightly and reduces spam complaints a lot.
Handle the mess
People typing an address into a phone keyboard in a DM will produce typos, will send "sure, it's name at gmail", and will occasionally reply with a question instead. Expect to lose a percentage to malformed input, and check what your tool does when the reply is not an address — a flow that silently drops those people loses you leads you never knew you had.
Consent is not optional
Someone giving you an address to receive a specific thing has not thereby signed up to a weekly newsletter. If you intend to market to them, say so at the point of asking — that is what makes the consent informed, and it is the difference between a list that opens your emails and a list that reports them.
This matters legally as well as practically in most of the world. Our own approach to data is on the Privacy Policy and the GDPR page.
What to do with the list
An email list you never email is not an asset, it is a liability with a storage cost. Send something within a few days of capture, while they remember who you are — a list that first hears from you three months later performs like a cold list, because it is one.
Setting it up
Email capture is a per-automation setting on Instagram in CommentFor, with forwarding to Kit or Flodesk when you connect one. You can enable it on one campaign and leave another open, alongside the follow gate, once-per-user and send-delay settings. The full list is on Features.
