Compare

CommentFor, ManyChat and Chatfuel, side by side.

Compared on the things that do not change every quarter — what each tool charges for, which channels it covers, and what it is built on.

Checked 28 August 2026. Plans and prices change often; every claim below links to the vendor's own page so you can confirm the current position before you decide.

The short version

ManyChat and Chatfuel are broad chat-marketing suites: many channels, many use cases, priced by how many contacts you accumulate. CommentFor does one job — turning Instagram comments into DMs — and prices by how much you send and how many accounts you connect. Which is better depends entirely on whether you want a suite or a specialist, and on how your audience grows relative to your sending.

What each tool charges for

This is the difference that matters most over time, and the one least likely to change. Contact-based pricing means your bill climbs as your audience accumulates, whether or not you message those people this month. Volume-based pricing means your bill tracks what you actually send.

  • CommentFor — priced by DMs per month and the number of connected Instagram accounts. Contacts are not metered. See Pricing.
  • ManyChat — publishes tiers based on the number of contacts, with higher tiers as contacts grow. Current tiers and figures are on manychat.com/pricing.
  • Chatfuel — publishes a free Light tier and an AI Pro tier at $49/month, with usage limits described on their plan limits page. See chatfuel.com/pricing.

Reading those tables honestly

The units are not the same, so the rows do not line up and we are not going to pretend they do. ManyChat counts the people in your audience; we count the messages you send. Which is cheaper depends entirely on the shape of your usage.

A rough way to think about it: if you message a small audience often, contact-based pricing tends to favour you. If your audience is large but you message a fraction of it, per-contact pricing charges you for people you never contacted, and volume-based pricing does not. Work out your own numbers before taking anyone's word for it, including ours.

Also worth noting: ManyChat's paid tiers cover several channels, ours covers Instagram today. If you need WhatsApp or SMS this month, that difference matters more than any price.

Channel coverage

ManyChat and Chatfuel both cover several messaging channels. CommentFor is Instagram-first by design: Instagram is live with the full feature set, Facebook Pages is built and waiting on Meta permissions, and WhatsApp, Telegram, YouTube and Threads are planned but not built — we list them as coming soon rather than implying they work today. If you need WhatsApp automation this month, we are not your tool, and we would rather say so here than after you have paid.

What it is built on

CommentFor runs entirely on Meta's official Instagram Platform API: you connect with Instagram Login on a professional account, and every reply is a genuine private reply within Meta's rules. There is no scraping, no automation of a logged-in session, and no password sharing. ManyChat and Chatfuel are both Meta Business Partners and likewise build on the official APIs. This is a bar all three clear — and one worth checking on any smaller tool you evaluate, because the ones that fail it put your account at risk.

The rules nobody can engineer around

Instagram permits one private reply per comment, within a seven-day window, under a platform limit of 750 private replies per hour. Those are Meta's rules, not any vendor's feature. No tool can exceed them; the only real difference is whether a tool paces itself sensibly underneath them and tells you honestly when a send will not go out. We wrote up how those limits work in detail.

Where CommentFor is genuinely different

  • Rewind — sweep a post that has already gone viral and DM the people who commented before you set anything up, within Meta's seven-day window.
  • Priced for sending, not for collecting — a large but quiet audience does not cost you more.
  • One job, done properly — keyword triggers on posts and reels, story replies and mentions, public comment replies, tracked links, follow gates, and email capture forwarding to Kit or Flodesk.

Where a suite may suit you better

If you want one tool covering WhatsApp, SMS, email and a website chat widget, with a visual flow builder for long branching conversations, a broad suite is the better fit today and we would point you at one. Our bet is that most Instagram creators and shops need one job done well rather than ten done adequately — but that is a bet about you, and you know your situation better than we do.

How to decide

Work out roughly how many DMs you send in a month and how fast your audience is growing. If your audience grows much faster than your sending, contact-based pricing will cost you more over time. If you send heavily to a small audience, it may cost you less. Then check the honest questions in choosing a comment-to-DM tool against every tool on your list, including this one.

Our own numbers are on Pricing, the full shipped feature list is on Features, and what is live versus coming per channel is on Instagram and the other channel pages.
