The link in bio is the worst link you have

One link for an entire account made sense when there was no alternative. There is one now, and the numbers are not close.

The link in bio exists because Instagram does not allow links in captions. It was a workaround, everyone adopted it, and after a decade it stopped being treated as a compromise and started being treated as the design.

What it costs

Three things, all of them quiet.

Taps. Leaving the post, opening the profile, finding the link, and then usually choosing from a list of links because one link was never enough. Every step sheds people who were, a moment ago, interested.

Relevance. The link in bio is whatever you last changed it to. Someone arriving from a post you published in March gets whatever September is promoting, which is rarely what they came for.

Attribution. Clicks pile up in one bucket. You can see that the bucket filled. You cannot see which post filled it, which is precisely the thing you would change your content strategy over.

What comment-to-DM does instead

The link travels to the person rather than the person travelling to the link. Someone comments a keyword on the post and the relevant link arrives in their inbox within seconds, from your account, in a thread that stays there.

Because the link is minted per campaign, the post that earned the click is the post that gets credited. No tagging convention to maintain, no spreadsheet reconciling profile clicks against posting dates.

The DM also survives. A profile link is a moment; a message sits in an inbox and gets found again a week later, which is why late clicks on these campaigns are more common than people expect.

Where it does not help

Being honest about this matters, because a tool that claims to replace everything replaces nothing well.

A DM only reaches people who comment. Someone who reads a post, wants what you are offering, and says nothing is still best served by a link on your profile. Keep it. It is the fallback, not the main road.

Stories are their own case. Story replies and mentions can trigger a DM, but a story link sticker is one tap and already works. Use the sticker and save the automation for the posts and reels where no link is possible.

And a private reply is allowed only within seven days of a comment and only once per comment. An evergreen post keeps earning comments for years, and each of those still gets its reply, but someone who comments twice on the same post gets one DM, not two.

The practical version

Keep the profile link pointing at whatever matters most this month. Run keywords on the individual posts that deserve their own destination. The profile catches the passive, the comment catches the intent, and only the second one tells you which post did the work.
